Hardcore. Old school. Intimidating. All of these words were once associated with boxing, but these days more and more of us are trying it as a workout and loving the results.
What used to be reserved for the spit and sawdust boxing gyms usually found under railway arches and down alleyways is now being offered to all walks of life in health clubs, boutique fitness studios and even online.
Most places now cater for all levels from beginner through to advanced, so it might be time to get your wraps on and try it yourself. Still need convincing? Keep reading…
It’s great for fat burning
Looking for a more interesting way to burn fat? Boxing is a great way to burn calories thanks to its high-intensity and full-body nature. It requires recruitment from all the major muscle groups and leaves your body in a state of exercise post-oxygen consumption (EPOC) – which basically means you’ll still be burning calories long after your session is over.
It will boost self-esteem
Exercise in general works wonders for mental health. Building strength, learning a new skill and challenging your body helps to build confidence – it’s rare to ever finish a workout feeling bad about yourself! But boxing in particular makes you feel really badass. Perfecting those punches, nailing those combinations and doing everything with power… you can’t go wrong!
It targets the whole body
Unlike running and cycling, which are incredibly lower-body heavy, boxing gives the whole body a good workout. While it may seem like it favours the upper body, generating power in each punch actually begins with the lower body – and when you bring ducks, rolls and weaves into the equation… well, trust us, your quads will be on fire.
A boxing workout is also always different, keeping your body guessing each time. There’s nothing monotonous about it – something to bear in mind if you’re put off by repetitive cardio workouts like running.
It’s a good distraction from daily stress
Whether you’re a lover or a fighter, there’s no denying how satisfying it feels to hit something… really hard! Releasing your aggression, anger and stress is a must at the end of a really hard day or week – and boxing is the perfect way to do it. Go hell for leather with those punches and let the happy hormones take over.
You can do it anywhere
Because of how popular boxing classes have become, there are now so many options when it comes to getting in your workout. There’s bag work, mitt work, sparring and now there are even shadow boxing home workouts that require little to no kit at all. Cue us (Boxx) an online platform specialising in boxing workouts, our subscriptions start from only £6.67 a month and can be done from the comfort of your own home.
