Is boxing a good way to lose belly fat?

Apr 22, 2019

Boxing is a high-intensity workout that can help you to burn calories, tone your body and challenge your mind. At the point where your brain is telling you that you can’t go on, boxing principles teach you to push through and discover new personal limits. It sounds like the perfect mind and body workout, but will it help you to lose belly fat?

The short answer is no. There is no one exercise that can isolate a part of your body for fat loss.

But the long answer is yes. The only way to lose belly fat is to lose overall body fat, and boxing is a great way to achieve this.

You don’t have to head to a specialist boxing gym to fit in an effective workout. Not only do most gyms offer a version of boxing exercise classes, usually called boxercise or body combat, you can also get your boxing fix from the comfort of your own home. There are plenty of excellent home boxing workout videos and classes available online that will let you try out boxing without setting foot in a sweaty gym. This allows you to take things at your own pace and takes away the chance that you’ll make an excuse for skipping your workout.

If you’re interested in boxing as a method to lose weight and feel incredible, read on to find out how to make the most of your boxing workout.

Targeted weight loss

As mentioned above, there really isn’t a way to isolate fat loss to a specific area. Instead, if your goal is to lose belly fat, you should look at ways to lose weight overall. Weight loss cannot be achieved by workouts alone, so you should also think about the fuel that you are putting into your body. Focus on whole foods, lean protein and plenty of fruit and vegetables. The best thing about boxing is that once you start to fuel your body in the right way, you will see results in your technique and stamina, so it will encourage you to make better choices throughout the day.

Focus on the core

An important aspect of boxing is strengthening your core muscles. Your core muscles help you to duck and weave when boxing, so it makes sense to incorporate core strengthening exercises into your everyday workouts. If you are someone who struggles with belly fat, you will find that strengthening your core helps to improve your posture which can help to make you appear leaner and slimmer, even if the number of the scales has barely shifted.

Cardio and weight loss

There’s no denying that cardio and weight loss go hand in hand. The best part about boxing workouts is that they can actually be more effective than pounding the treadmill for mile after mile. If you’re guilty of getting bored of the same old workouts, boxing will help to keep you on track and focused on your goals. You might not even notice how hard you are working during an intense workout, which means you won’t just be watching the clock to get your workouts out of the way. Core boxing warmups like jump rope are a great way to get your muscles going, while bag work is an intense workout that is sure to get your heart rate up while also focussing your mind.

If your goal is to lose weight, boxing is a fun way to achieve your goals and have fun while you’re doing it. Many fans of boxing workouts report that they feel stronger and more empowered than ever before, and the shrinking number of the scale quickly becomes an afterthought.
